The 43rd World Heritage Committee held at Baku, Azerbaijan determined to register ‘Seowon of Korea’ as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. So, Jeongeup Museongseowon was registered as the 14th UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Korea.

Museongseowon (historic site No.166) located at Chilbo-myeon, Jeongeup-si was built for inhabitant's academic promotion by a local officer, but afterwards, it was used for admiring Choi Chiwon, a confucian scholar, under the name of Taesansa. In 1696, King Sukjong 22nd year, it was designated as a national seowon.

Heungseon Daewongun, an aristocrat, ordered to demolish seowons, but only Museongseowon remained in Jeollabuk-do. The seowon was a sauce from which scholar's spirit came into wide use to Honam district, centered on Choi Chiwon's thoughts.

So, Jeollabuk-do will prepare and carry out a policy to preserve and manage the remains, based on international norms such as 'Agreement on World Heritage' and 'Manage Guidelines'. With the purpose of congratulating and memorizing the registration at world heritage, Jeollabuk-do will hold a large-scale event in September and push ahead with registering Gochang Mud Flat in 2020 and Gaya Tombs as world heritage.
